The Object and its Aesthetic

An iconic creation from the mid-1950s, the “Corail” vase is a celebration of movement and material. Designed by master glassmaker René Delvenne for the Belgian manufacturer Val Saint Lambert, this heavy crystal vase (over 1.5 kg) features organic lines of remarkable fluidity.
Its intense royal cobalt blue hue stretches from the base to the neck in an upward twisting motion, evoking the sinuous growth of coral reefs. Worked while hot, the varying thickness of the crystal creates unique refractive effects: light passes through the heart of the piece to make its azure shades vibrate. An imposing glass sculpture (38 cm in height) that catches the eye, whether filled with flowers or simply displayed as an independent work of art.

René Delvenne and the Golden Age of "Fancy Pieces"

In the 1950s, the Val Saint Lambert manufactory (founded in 1826) sought to modernize its image and compete with the organic creations of Murano or Scandinavian glassware. Under the artistic direction of Charles Graffart, and subsequently thanks to the bold lines introduced by René Delvenne, the crystal factory gave birth to a line named: "Modern Fancy Pieces."
Delvenne revolutionized shapes by introducing these stretched, mouth-blown vases with free and dynamic forms. The 1956 “Corail” model is the perfect witness to this pivotal period where the ancestral know-how of crystal cutting gave way to the pure expression of form in fusion.

The Galerie POPINCOURT Perspective

What makes this Corail vase so rare is the perfect encounter between the historical rigor of Val Saint Lambert crystal and the freedom of Mid-Century design. René Delvenne succeeded in breaking away from traditional geometric lines to offer an almost liquid, organic piece of wild modernity for 1956.
Finding this model today in such a state of preservation, without the slightest chip and with absolute transparency, free of any limescale deposits, is an event for our gallery. It is a collector's item that instantly adds a touch of historical elegance and "signature blue" radiance to any contemporary interior.
Purchasing high-end crystal pieces from the 1950s is now a particularly wise heritage choice. The market for 20th-century decorative arts is experiencing a strong revaluation, driven by international collectors seeking authentic, traceable objects with a strong visual identity.
Val Saint Lambert is one of the most solid and recognized signatures in the history of European glass. A model listed as "Corail," documented in the manufacturer's official 1956 catalog, ticks all the boxes of a safe-haven asset:
• Perfect traceability (mentioned in the period catalog).
• Growing scarcity on the market for pieces in perfect condition (period crystal has often suffered).
• A growing interest in the work of René Delvenne.
Investing in this vase means acquiring a piece of the golden age of Belgian design. Unlike mass-produced decorative items that depreciate instantly, this crystal gains value over the decades. It is a tangible, decorative asset that is highly liquid on the art market.
